Mary, or “Betty” as she was affectionately called by family members, was the daughter of Robert and Mary Wilbert. She was raised in Spring Lake Hgts., NJ, and graduated from Manasquan High School. She earned her B.A from Montclair State College and her M.A. from the University of Michigan.
For a decade she was employed by the Grace Lines and “sailed the colorful Caribbean.” She then taught English in NYC public schools until her retirement circa 1995. After years of residence in Bloomfield, NJ, she moved to Toms River, NJ.
Survivors include her devoted partner Audrey Moore; brothers Charles and William; and a niece and five nephews.
Mary was an avid reader of American and European history. She was also the “family historian,” painstakingly researching Wilbert ancestors.
Mary savored New Jersey beaches and was a strong and graceful swimmer.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 12- 1PM at the Quinn-Hopping funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Toms River.
A celebration of Mary’s life is planned for June 2018. After that event some of the attendees will likely gather at the boardwalk in Sea Girt, NJ, gaze out to sea, and glimpse Mary swimming majestically and indefatigably beyond all others.
