Maureen O’Flaherty Groseclose, born April 10, 1929 in Newark, New Jersey, passed away peacefully May 11, 2025 in Old Bridge, New Jersey — on Mother’s Day.
Maureen was the family matriarch. She went from being widowed at a young age with six kids in Newark to, against all odds, becoming a highly successful and accomplished insurance executive at a time when there were few female business leaders in the profession. In 1983, she and Tyler Groseclose, Jr, “Grosie” — her best friend and love of her life — became co-owners of T.L. Groseclose Associates until they fully retired in 1993. They spent their time equally in Ponte Vedra, Florida, and Lawrenceville, New Jersey with some fun travel excursions along the way.
Maureen’s booming laugh was as loud and strong as her political views. Her legendary pot roast and blueberry pie were as comforting as her smile, wit and Irish charm. Her Christmas parties were filled with laughter and love. She was a true role model. Her intellect was unmatched — sharpened by a lifetime of playing scrabble, cross-word puzzles and reading. Her greatest joy came from being a mother, from her family, and from celebrating all their achievements. “All the love and pleasure they have brought to me,” Maureen once said, “there is nothing to compare to it.”
Maureen was insistent that no one should be sad at her passing — she lived a long, incredible life and wanted a celebration. The O’Flaherty sisters are now all back together, dancing the Irish jig from up above.
Maureen was predeceased by her husband Tyler; her first husband Joseph A. Castner; her parents William John and Anna Kane O’Flaherty; infant brother William John O’Flaherty Jr.; her sons Joseph and Michael Castner; her daughter Carole Baran; and her sisters Catherine O’Flaherty Horan and Theresa O’Flaherty Nardone.
Maureen is survived by daughter Diane Castner (Susan), sons William (Diane) and Thomas Castner (Rayda), eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 9:30 am -10:30 am at the Quinn-Hopping funeral home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, with a funeral service to begin promptly at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place in Memphis, Tennessee (www.stjude.org).
