

Nicholas M. Colombo, 81, of Toms River, NJ passed away on Saturday at Brandywine Assisted Living in Toms River. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he lived there, Howell and Colonia before moving to the Holiday City South section Berkeley Twp. in 1999.
Nicholas was a graduate of Queens College, Flushing, NY with a degree in Mathematics and Physics with a minor in psychology. He earned his master’s degree in social work from Fordham University. He began his career as a social worker at N.Y. Foundling Hospital where he met his wife, Elizabeth, a pediatric nurse, and they married in 1961. After 34 years employment as a psychiatric social worker at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, he retired in 1997 as a supervisor with the designation of Assistant Professorship at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY.
After living in Howell, NJ for 18 years, he moved to Colonia and then to the Holiday City South section of Berkeley Township in 1997. Although legally blind he enjoyed all sports both as a participant and as a spectator. He and his wife Elizabeth ran the Howell Central Little League program for 8 years while also coaching soccer and basketball. Athletics always played an important part in their family life. Nicholas was a bowler in various leagues since the age of 18 and continued to play at Holiday City South. He was also an avid bocce player and served as president of the Holiday City Bocce Club for five years.
Nicholas always wanted to be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was a quiet calming influence and preferred to think through problems and proceed with reason and caution.
Nicholas was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth in 2015. He is survived by his six children, Michael, Keith, Denise, Karen, Stephen and Daniel; his two sisters, Rae and Caroline; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday January 16, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road Toms River, NJ 08755 where a funeral service will take place at 8 PM. There will be visiting hours on Wednesday from 9 am to 10 am. Burial will be on Wednesday January 17, 2018 at St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River at 10:30 AM.
