

Center, Toms River surrounded by her loving family. Born in Tupper Lake NY the youngest of five children, she resided there till she was 16, moving then to Bayside Long Island. She worked in NYC for a few years as a bookkeeper, then marrying Trent
Burt in 1953. Divorced in 1971 she went back to school and began her career
working for the Ocean County Sheriff s department as a clerk typist while raising
four children. Working her way up she began working for the Energy department
of the county, eventually becoming its Energy Coordinator, a position she was very
proud to hold. Known as "Solar Sal your energy Gal" to those who worked with
her, she coordinated events, workshops and public awareness on energy
conservation. Throughout the 1980's and early 1990's Sally was passionate about
her work on energy conservation and the use of solar energy to preserve our
natural resources. Working tirelessly to educate the public on energy conservation,
Sally was recognized over the years for her efforts by the Governors of NJ and was
also invited to the White House twice to meet then Presidents Carter and Reagan
and received awards for her efforts. Retiring in 1999, she enjoyed going to gift
auctions, attending bingo games, going to Atlantic City, traveling to Ireland and
her beloved Tupper Lake where she grew up, and being with her grandchildren and
great grandchildren, whom she adored.
She is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Theresa Bums, her brother Joseph
Bums, sisters Francis Bums and Eleanor Godfrey and daughter in law Kathleen Burt.
She is survived by her four children, Timothy Burt, daughter-in-law Fran Burt of
Toms River. Michael Burt of Brick NJ, Shawn Burt of Lancaster PA, and Maureen
Laffan and son-in-law Leslie Laffan of Toms River. She leaves behind 13
grandchildren Aleda Vogel, Kelli Burt, Rebekah Burt, Rachel Burt, Michael Burt,
Bethany Burt, Melissa Burt, Jennifer Dalton, Jack Porter, Sarah Laffan Giuffra,
Maureen Laffan and Mary Laffan. Also six great grandchildren. She is also
survived by one sister Madeline Bums of San Francisco California and several
nieces and nephews. Visiting will be Saturday from 2-6 pm with a funeral service at
5pm at the Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Rd. Toms River, Cremation will
be private.
