R.I.P. Bonnie

“The Heart of Every Home”

She moves through life like dawn through trees,
Soft as whispers on a summer breeze,
A quiet strength, a gentle hand,
The kindest soul to grace this land.

As daughter, she’s the morning light,
A joy that makes the shadows bright.
With every smile, she seems to say,
“I carry love in every way.”

As mother, she’s the beating heart,
That keeps the world from falling apart.
Her lullabies and tender grace,
Are stars that time cannot erase.

As sister, she’s the steady flame,
Who knows your laughter and your name.
A loyal echo in life’s song,
A bond that holds you when you’re wrong.

As friend, she is the open door,
A haven when your soul is sore.
No judgment lives behind her eyes—
Just kindness deep, and always wise.

She is the warmth in winter’s chill,
The calm that makes the storm grow still.
She loves like gardens love the rain,
She heals like time, she feels your pain.

Her laughter’s soft, like wind in leaves,
She gives much more than she receives.
A thread of gold in life’s great weave,
In her, the best of hearts believe.

So raise a prayer, a glass, a song,
For one whose love is wide and strong—
A daughter, mother, sister, friend—
A light that glows, that will not end.

Our next door neighbour on Grass Lake for many years.Fond memories of the time we spent together. You are free now Bonnie to "shop" at will. RIP

Bonnie, I am deeply saddened to see you go. From the very first moment we met, you made me feel like part of your family. I will always cherish our conversations, hearing your amazing stories, and appreciating the advice you gave. Thank you for the memories we created at Sauble Beach. These moments we had will stay with me forever. You were a beautiful woman, inside and out, radiating light and always seeing the good in the world. You will be missed more than words can express, and know that you will always hold a special place in my heart. Until we meet again 🤍🕊️

My Sister Bonnie
 
The first thing you should know about my sister Bonnie is that wasn’t her real name.
 
At least, not at first.
 
She was born January 5, 1941, as Cynthia Sue. But the moment her Grampa Balky saw her, he said, What a Bonnie Baby, and since he was right, as grampas usually are, that was that.
 
Of course, Bonnie’s new name wasn’t official, as she found out much later when she couldn’t cash her first pay cheque because she had no I.D. saying she was who everyone had been calling her all her life! So, she jumped through the required legal hoops, not to change her name but to expand it, finally and officially becoming Bonnie Cynthia Sue.
 
I’ve always known how fortunate I am to have Bonnie as my sister, technically one of a matched pair because my sister Judy is equal in my eyes as to how my closely-knit extended family has been happily shaped by them both over the years. (And I’m very relieved our mother Mimi’s prediction never came to pass. She once told me that she feared that by the time her girls had passed through their teenage years, she would only have one daughter because one of them would have done in the other!)
 
Luckily, however Bonnie and Judy might have nattered at each other as kids, and what sisters don’t, they grew up to be not only sisters, but the closest of friends. And that was and is a gift to my family, and to several others that combined with ours, now covering multiple generations.
 
This happy state of affairs began with Bonnie, who graduated as a dental nurse and went to work for a Doctor Warren Leslie Heaslip. Dr. Heaslip’s son, Warren, joined his father’s practice, he and Bonnie started dating, and Warren was so taken with Bonnie that his best friend since grade school asked, Does she have a sister? 
 
So it was that sister Bonnie married Warren and sister Judy married Murray Kingsburgh. Two best friend sisters marrying two best friends, always living close by, their children, Jeff, Saundra, and Steven Heaslip, and Robin, Wendy, and Campbell Kingsburgh, growing up more like brothers and sisters than mere cousins. And lucky me, and my brother Sid, smack in the middle for all the family celebrations and holidays, of which there were so many.
 
But for all the large gatherings our combined families shared, there were some things particular to just Bonnie and me, no doubt channeled into us by way of Mimi. We both had a shared sense of wonder about the mysteries of the universe, especially the chance of life existing somewhere else. Bonnie was rational about it, as I hope I am. Our discussions were always about the possibilities and the need for solid evidence. But still, we couldn’t help wondering, What if… ?
