I remember his big smile, the way he would tilt his head and look into my eyes when he shook my hand.  He is a precious man.

My friend Wiseman Sikakane introduced my family to Reverend Sikakane in December 2011. Wiseman had graciously invited us and hosted us while my family were in holiday from South Africa in Minneapolis. I was a Hubert Humphrey fellow at the University of Minnesota. 
The Rev was such a humble man of God. That short time I spent with him made a huge impression on my life till this day. Like an understudy I was amazed at his depth of character and spirit. I also took opportunity to ask him questions I had longer wanted to ask about how Christian missions and evangelism spread in my own native South Africa and how ministers of the gospel resisted apartheid etc. He truly served his Lord with distinction, making great sacrifices to spread the message of reconciliation between God and humanity. He answered every question I had with the utmost patience. Whenever my mind would revisit the memory of our meeting, I would reckon, “I should have asked this or that question.” For me, he was lay preacher, theologian and sage. You see, I never had the opportunity to meet my granddad as he passed on when I was a baby.
When I met the Rev, in my heart I told myself that if I would choose a granddaddy, he would have been just like him. The amazing thing is that in the Eastern Cape province where I’m from in South Africa, there is a recent call to rediscover and trace the spiritual roots of the great men and women God used in our region to transform hearts and minds for Christ, even during the darkest of times in our history. The Rev will go down in memory lane as one such a servant of God that lived well to the glory of God. Thank you my dear friend Wiseman for introducing me to your dad and hero and for sharing him, even for such brief moments with us. May the peace of the Lord be with you family as you prepare to celebrate a giant in the faith, Rev. Ebenezer Mndeni Sikakane. You’re run the race well and sacrificed beyond measure. Sleep well, Sir. Salute.
