Elair (born Elair Maud Young) came into this world early one Thursday morning to proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Young in Adelphi, St. James, Jamaica. She was the second of four siblings. After attending preschool as a young child, she went to Adelphi Public School until the age of 13. She would then attend the St. Paul’s High School in Montego Bay until she graduated to then study at the Nursing School in Montego Bay.
She attended the Anglican Young Peoples’ Association, Girls’ Club, 4H Club, and was involved in competitive recitals. She also attended domestic science classes where she studied cooking and baking. Elair was also a member of a women’s basketball team. Over the holidays during high school, she also worked at the Adelphi Post Office.
After migrating to Canada in the 60s, she got a job at Branson Hospital where she worked for four years. She would then attend nursing school and graduate as a Registered Practical Nurse ultimately returning to Branson where she worked for almost 30 years of her nursing career. Due to a back injury, she would end her full-time career early to work part time at St. John’s Rehabilitation Center.
Elair loved church and the things of God. She was an intercessor and would share her love for Jesus with everyone she met. She loved to encourage young people to stay in school and get an education. She would also pray for the sick.
Elair is survived by her sister Yvonne, her brother Raymond, her Son Jeffrey, her grandson London, daughter-in-law Jacqueline, her sister-in-law Pansy, her cousin Joy, and her nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Program, where Elair received her care, or to honor her devotion to family, a contribution toward her grandson’s education fund through her son, Jeffery.
Ladies are welcome to wear a hat or fascinator to the service.
