In his 92nd year, Fred passed away peacefully on November 8, 2022. Predeceased by his treasured wife of 65 years, Hilda Anne Blain (nee Kotschenreuter). Loving father of Nanci Womersley (John), Peter (Debbie) and John (Melody). Beloved grandfather to Laura (Antoine), Denise (Nick), Andrew, Thomas, Russell and Charlotte. Great-grandfather “Grapes” to Milo. Predeceased by sisters Violet and Joy (Brownie) and brother Herb. Loving brother of Pat Robson (Van) and brother-in-law of Pat Blain.
Born to Thomas and Ethel Blain (nee Burnside) in 1931, Fred was raised in the Beaches and woven into Toronto’s fabric from birth. He grew up in a time when it was not unusual for neighbourhood families to endure hot summer nights by sleeping on the beach. He had many humorous stories of misadventures that could captivate family and friends, including the time the steering wheel of his first car came off its column into his hands while driving.
A young Fred followed a want ad to a job writing bond prices on a chalkboard. This launched a 37-year career on Bay St. which would culminate in him running the largest debt trading desk in Canada at RBC Dominion Securities. He made many lifelong friends in the investment business and thrived on its energy and challenge. His dedication, purpose, intensity and immense people skills carried him throughout his working life. He brought the same care and work ethic home. Car waxing day drew long faces from the kids, knowing a full day of work was needed to do the job right. But we realized the lesson was bigger than cars, as we witnessed the depths of his care and compassion for family and friends. We’ll never know the full extent of his generosity, but it was on full display during Mom’s long illness, during which Dad selflessly dedicated his entire being to her comfort.
In retirement, Fred and Hilda volunteered at Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill, including Fred’s tenure as treasurer.
Fred delighted in epic family vacations, and in gatherings with family and friends. Memories of gatherings he and Hilda hosted in their home to mark milestone anniversaries warmed his heart. His love of classic Hollywood films also helped to sustain him in his final months.
The family thanks the staff and residents at Amica Bayview Gardens, who cared for him and showed him endless kindness. We also thank the medical and palliative teams at NYGH who provided him with exemplary care and comfort in his final days.
A private service will be held before interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations may be made in Fred’s honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, or the charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kanejerrettnorthyork.ca for the Blain family.
