Liu Qian came to Canada at the age of 23, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication from Beijing City University, planning to upgrade her English in order to study at the Master’s level. She was among a small group of her peers with backgrounds in humanities, communications, art, or music, attempting to find graduate programs in these fields. This ambition calls for higher English proficiency than is required for technical and mathematical fields. Liu Qian, however, was ambitious, determined, and hard-working, and her instructors believed that she was very close to succeeding. She had already achieved the required English score for admission to graduate programs; only three percent of students in China achieve a score as high as hers.
Some people believe that the life of an international student studying English far from home must be lonely and difficult, but this was not true of Qian. She made many friends, and had many around her who cared very much for her. She is remembered as someone who loved colour, and who painted the space around her with colors of passion, intensity, and expression. She is already much missed by her classmates, teachers, and friends.
