

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sidney James Rodger, who left us peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Beamsville, Ontario, at the age of 89. Born on October 26, 1935, in Toronto, Sidney lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and an unwavering spirit that touched the lives of many.
Sidney was predeceased by his beloved parents, Sidney Westlake Rodger and Philippa Agnes Fitz Henry; his dear sister, Helen Green; his cherished sons, Michael Rodger, Peter Rodger, and Robert Rodger; Barbara Joan Rodger, the mother of his eight children; and his wife of 25 years. Despite profound losses, Sidney’s resilience and strength inspired all who knew him.
His legacy continues through his loving children: David Rodger (Jane), Michele Chard (Brad -deceased), James Rodger(Cindy), Patricia Stafferton (Barry),Kevin Rodger (Renea), and the memories of his predeceased sons. He is also survived by his devoted sister and best friend Sheila Rodger. Sidney was the proud grandfather of Ryan, Sarah, Henry, Aidan, Alex, Vanessa, Stephanie, Robert, Blake, Seth, Zoe, Billie-Joe, Kimberly, Megan (predeceased), Cameron, Natasha, Colleen, and Christina. His family continued to grow with 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. Dear uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Standing tall at 6 foot 6, Sidney had an immense heart that filled the world with warmth, compassion, and generosity. His towering presence was matched only by the depth of his love for family, friends, and community.
Sidney devoted his life to education, inspiring countless students through his passion for teaching. He earned degrees from both McGill University and the University of Toronto, specializing in horticulture and history. As President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF), Sidney was a tireless advocate, negotiating on behalf of teachers across Ontario and championing their rights.
A lifelong learner and historian at heart, Sidney had a profound love for history and ancestry, sharing his vast knowledge with family, friends, and anyone eager to learn. He was an avid gardener and canoeist, with a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. Whether navigating the serene waters of Algonquin Park or cultivating a thriving garden, Sidney’s connection to nature was unwavering. His vast knowledge and survival skills made him the person you’d want by your side on any outdoor adventure.
Sidney’s adventurous spirit took him across Canada, from special journeys with his wife and children to Alaska and the East Coast, to travels around the world with cherished friends. His stories, wisdom, and companionship created treasured memories for all who knew him.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life he led and the cherished memories he created with those he loved.
A funeral service will be held at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Parish, 24 Cheritan Avenue, Toronto, on Tuesday July 29th at 11am.
As an expression of sympathy memorial may be made to Parkinson or Diabetes Canada.
Rest peacefully, Sidney. Your towering presence, boundless heart, devotion to knowledge, and adventurous spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
