Susanne Elizabeth Moore (née Black) October 28, 1937 - June 15, 2025. Daughter of the late Robert N. Black and Lorra E. Black. Susanne passed away peacefully in hospital on Sunday, June 15. Susanne leaves behind her beloved husband of 64 years Ken, her daughter, Lori (Shirley), and her cherished dog, Roxy.
Born in Toronto, Susanne grew up in the Riverdale neighbourhood, and then moved to North York where her father had a home built on Talbot Road. Unbeknownst to her, her future husband lived just around the corner on Hendon Avenue. Ken and Susanne were married in June 1961, at St. John’s Presbyterian Church. In 1967, they bought a home on Cresthaven Drive. A few years later, their joy expanded with the birth of their daughter, Lori, and they went on to create a lifetime of memories in that home for almost 58 years. Dogs were always an important part of the family, bringing joy and companionship: Joey, Corky, Gretel, Tara, Molly, Sally, Lucy, Minnie and Roxy.
Susanne loved the Lord deeply, serving Him in various congregations over the years. She dedicated her time as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Westminster Ladies’ group, choir member and pianist. She always made time to support charitable causes, being recognized for her volunteer work. She is now rejoicing with the Lord and welcomed by those who preceded her.
Her home was filled with music whether it was her playing hymns on the piano, listening to favourite gospel records or tuning in to The Gaithers on TV. She also enjoyed watching the Leafs and Blue Jays. A true fan, she was at Maple Leaf Gardens when the Leafs last won the Stanley Cup. She was always hoping to see them win it one more time! She had her “honeys” from those teams; Johnny Bower, Ernie Whitt, Tom Henke, and Alejandro Kirk.
The holidays were always filled with tradition. Though the immediate family was small, friends would often gather for food and festivities with Sues and Ken hosting. After her mother and aunt passed away in the same year, a new tradition was started at Christmas and for the next five decades, included the Hembruff family, with Elizabeth being her lifelong friend from the age of three or four.
Susanne had her favourite travel destinations, which included Walt Disney World, and regular shopping trips to Buffalo. These Buffalo excursions included dining at The Olive Garden and The Cheesecake Factory. She loved dining out wherever she was, and this included a weekly visit to Swiss Chalet. She also enjoyed spending time at various cottages (Manitoulin Island, Belmont Lake, Orr Lake) and introducing cottage life to some of her friends.
Before Lori was born, Susanne worked in various secretarial roles with the North York Board of Education, Shell Oil, and the Independent Order of Foresters. When Lori was in elementary school, she looked to return to work and answered a help wanted ad for a secretarial position at the office of Mr. C. J. Weiler. She started working just two days a week, gradually adding more days until she was full-time. She enjoyed helping people, eventually specializing in estates and wills. She would encourage widows to learn how to drive and establish credit when their husbands passed away so that they could be independent. She also assisted many family and friends with the purchase and sale of their homes. Her dedication to her work was remarkable, and she continued working in a law office until she was over 80.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Susanne to The Scott Mission.
