Services for Douglas (Doug) Roland Crawford, age 73, of Tyler, will be held Monday, June 16, 10:00 am at Lloyd James Funeral Home with Bennie Portwood officiating. Private graveside services will follow at the Walnut Grove Cemetery under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Doug was born in San Antonio, Texas on February 11, 1952 to Kenneth and Daisy Crawford. The family moved to Tyler when Doug was five years old. He married Nancy Portwood on December 26, 1976. They had almost 49 years together.
Doug graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1970 and from Tyler Junior College in 1972 where he was a member of Las Mascaras. Doug loved the theater and movies, especially old movies. He earned a second degree in Graphic Design from Tyler Junior College in 1978. Then Doug worked as a Graphic Designer for many years at Graphic Communications and Tyler Junior College. Unsurprisingly, he loved photography and design. But Doug also loved working on old cars, building and fixing things, and finding the best possible bargain he could possibly find on anything he needed. Doug was a “helper” and it gave him great joy when he could help someone, particularly if he could help them find a “deal”. He volunteered behind the scenes for 30 years at Literacy Council of Tyler. He was the official photographer for Literacy Council and also its official purchaser of office supplies. Literacy Council was never short on pictures or paper clips.
Most importantly, Doug loved God, and he loved his family. He attended Grace Community Church for many years. In his later years, he attended St. Francis Episcopal Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Crawford; his mother, Daisy Crawford and one sister, Becky Locke.
Doug is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Portwood Crawford and by his daughter Abby and husband Matt Blair of St, Louis, Missouri and daughter Alice and husband Michael Carey of Chantilly, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister Nita Maxell and brother, Bill Crawford. Doug leaves six wonderful grandchildren: Daisy Blair, Josephine Blair, Ben Carey, Eleanor Carey, Gus Carey and Zeke Carey. Doug is also survived by many other loving family members and friends.
The Crawford Family wishes to express special thanks to Hospice of East Texas for their help in the last days of Doug’s life. Per his wishes no visitation will be held. In his memory, donations may be made to Hospice of East Texas, Literacy Council of Tyler, St. Francis Episcopal Church or the church or charity of your choice.
Please note that dress clothes are not required; dress casually if you wish. The service will be livestreamed on the Lloyd James Facebook page.
