He graduated from Spur High School in Spur, TX where his parents were cotton farmers. From there he attended and received his degree from Draughn's Business College in Lubbock, TX. Later he attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX.
While in Lubbock he met and married Ivan Claunch Phillips, the mother of his two children. He is preceded in death by both of his parents (Eufala Carroll Randall and P. H. Carroll), three brothers (Newell B., Cholly, and Clifford), four sisters (Mae, Gracie, Bonnie, and Pearl), his wife, Pauline Carroll, and his daughter-in-law, Rebecca Watson Carroll. In later years, he worked much of his life as an Inn Keeper for Holiday Inns of America and later owned his own hotel and adjoining restaurant. After retiring from the hotel industry he owned several successful businesses in Longview, TX and eventually settled in East Texas as a gentleman rancher. In the summer of 2012 he moved to Las Vegas, NM to be near his daughter.
He was an accomplished violinist, a Sunday school teacher and deacon in his Southern Baptist church for many years. Often he could be found donating his time playing his violin in churches, hospitals, and retirement homes to the enjoyment of many.
