Iris Jane Harris

Jane was born to John F. Shettlesworth and Mettie Sue Knight Shettlesworth in Dallas, Texas on February 25, 1923. After graduating from high school, Jane worked as a secretary at North American Aircraft. On May 9, 1948 she married Leon W. Harris in Venice, Louisiana. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage until his death in 2011.

Leon and Jane raised six children whom they loved dearly in Houston, Texas. After Leon’s retirement in 1990, they moved to Elkins Lake in Huntsville, Texas where they enjoyed playing golf and relaxing with family and friends. They were active members of Elkins Lake Baptist Church. In 2010 they sold their home and downsized. They moved to Greenville, Texas to live near their daughter Rebecca, where Jane stayed until 2017, when she moved to Conroe, Texas.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents John F. Shettlesworth and Mettie Sue Shettlesworth, brother John F Shettlesworth Jr (Emily), husband Leon Harris, son Jefferson Paul Harris, and son in law Jeffrey L. Riley. She is survived by her children, John David Harris (Wendy) of Montgomery, TX, Karl V. Harris of Grand Prairie, TX, Rebecca J. Wright (John David) of Greenville, TX, Suzanne Riley of Springfield, VA, and Daniel L. Harris (Betsy) of El Campo, TX; grandchildren, Danny Harris (Christina), Jeffrey Wright, Robert Harris (Kristina), Stephanie Harris, Clay Harris (Ginger), Emily Riley Benedict (Patrick), Paul Harris (Adrienne), and John Riley; great grandchildren, John David Harris, Duncan Harris, Corbin Harris, Abigail Harris, Jonah Harris, Evelyn Harris, and Benjamin Harris.

The family was fortunate to have a mother and grandmother who taught them the importance of love and forgiveness and to always have faith in the Lord. She will be greatly missed by all, but what a wonderful example she set. She will also be remembered for being a wonderful cook and for making sure that everyone knew they were always welcome in her home.
