Major James Charles Fletcher, USAF Retired, age 93, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, in Tyler, Texas. Born on February 13, 1932, in Vernon, Texas, James was the son of John and J. Alice Fletcher. A man of steadfast faith, profound humility, and exceptional intellect, he lived a life marked by service—to his country, to his family, and to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
James completed training through the United States Air Force Academy program and entered active duty in 1950. His distinguished military career spanned more than three decades, serving on active duty until 1966 and in the USAF Reserve until 1986. A gifted aviator, he flew numerous fighter aircraft, including the F-80 and F-86 Sabre, as well as the F-102 and F-106. He served as a test pilot during the early era of jet aviation and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Throughout his career, James took on assignments of extraordinary responsibility and courage. He flew missions with Air America, patrolled during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and served with NATO forces. He was also part of the air task force supporting astronaut John Glenn’s historic reentry. His service reflected unwavering dedication, deep patriotism, and a pioneering spirit that defined the early jet age.
After retiring from the Air Force, James continued to excel academically and professionally. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Industrial Relations. He went on to serve as a labor negotiator for several unions, including the Teamsters, where his fairness, insight, and calm leadership earned the respect of colleagues and counterparts alike.
Beyond his many achievements, James will be remembered most for his loving heart. He cherished God, his family, and the simple joys of life. He enjoyed playing golf and watching Gunsmoke, but his greatest fulfillment came from being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor. He held a special, father-like bond with his grandson Nick, guiding him with wisdom, patience, and unwavering love.
James was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane; his son, Jim Jr.; and his brother, John. He is survived by his loving wife, Karin; his sons Bobby (Connie) of Rockwall, Texas, and Calen (Marla) of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; his daughter April of Temple, Texas; and his stepdaughter Carol of Tyler, Texas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, December 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James’s memory to Hospice of East Texas.
Major James Charles Fletcher lived his life with courage, integrity, and devotion. His legacy endures in the countless lives he touched, the country he served, and the family he loved so deeply. May he rest in eternal peace.
