“Do not mourn me, do not drown me in black cloth and quiet whispers. Laugh loud, drink deep, and tell the stories that made me live. Remember the jokes, the nights that stretched into dawn, the times we swore we’d never forget…and don’t. I was here, a life well lived, I want something more than tears. So, raise a glass and dance a little, let the wind take my name…I’ll be listening. Do not mourn me, celebrate me.”
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Warren Douglas Woodcock who, after 91 years of spreading joy, love, and occasional chaos, decided it was time to retire (again). He is undoubtedly already planning his next venture and leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love, quick wit, and kindness.
Warren was known for his service to the country in the United States Navy serving on the USS Iowa and simultaneous managing A Christmas Tree Farm, State Park Concessions, numerous machine shops and no-nonsense approach to business but, those who really knew him knew his passion was for driving fast (which he never did quite master).
Warren was an original – businessman, family man, part comedian, and all heart. Under the sometimes gruff exterior was a man who genuinely cared about and wanted the best for his family, friends, co-workers and employees. (Picture a modern-day version of John Wayne in “McClintock” but, with Joan Woodcock being the only one who could put him in his place.) *enter Joan Woodcock screeching “WOODCOCK!”* He had a knack for turning the most mundane moments into an adventure and always being up for a new project or quest.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents (Wilburn and Phoebe Woodcock), brother (Wesley Woodcock), loving wife (Joan Woodcock), daughter (Jeanette Van Houten), son-in-law (Kevin Van Houten), and grandson (Michael Woodcock).
Warren’s family was his greatest joy. He took great pride in watching everyone grow, mature, venture out and forge their own paths in life. Those left to cherish his memory are his sister Karen Boatwright (David); son (John Woodcock); sister-in-law (Nita Woodcock); grandchildren, John Woodcock, Jr., Christina Smith (Coy), Christopher Woodcock (Sarah), Kimberly Tutwiler (Kyle), Rebecca Van Houten (Kadeem); great grandchildren, Savanna Barrows (Coy), Abigail Barrows (Carson) Emma Barrows, Leigh Woodcock, Gabriel Barrows, Natalie Woodcock, and Alyssa Smith; great great granddaughter Aspen Wildt; and longtime friend Shellie Hack.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Warren’s caregiver, Sandra Trost, and to the staff of Choice Hospice.
In honor of Warren’s legacy, we ask that you take the time to visit your families and make as many memories as you can with them. “Well, I ain't paying ya'll to stand around and talk, get back to work.” – WDW
A celebration of Life service for Mr. Woodcock will be held on Friday, September 19th at 11:00 am at Lloyd James Funeral Home with Larry Simmons officiating. The family will gather to receive friends for a time of visitation, beginning at 10:00 am prior to the service. Burial will be at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery.
