Dr. Anne Vezza PhD passed away August 10th at the Sunrise home in Basking Ridge. Born and raised in Union City, Dr. Vezza was 74 at the time of her passing. She was a resident of Norwood in Bergen County before moving to Berkeley Heights earlier this year.
Born on April 29, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Florence Vezza. She attended Holy Rosary Academy grammar school and high school, where she excelled at science. Science, it turns out, became her passion.
After high school, Dr. Vezza attended Rutgers University where she earned bachelor, master’s and doctorate degrees. She received her degrees in microbiology. She specialized in virology, the study of viruses. After being awarded her doctorate degree, she went to work at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Manhattan.
She was recruited by the University of Alabama to be Associate Director of the university’s Biomedical Laboratory and to teach in their medical school. Dr. Vezza eventually rose to become director of the laboratory.
During her time at Alabama she published a number of professional papers detailing her work on viruses. In addition, she gave presentations overseas on her work.
In 1998, Dr. Vezza retired from the University of Alabama to care for her mother. At that time, she went back to Rutgers and earned a doctorate degree in Pharmacology. She worked as a pharmacist for a number of years before retiring again.
Dr. Vezza is survived by her brother Richard Vezza, her sister-in-law Arlene Vezza, a niece Rebecca Vezza, a nephew Daniel Vezza, and a grand-niece Camryn Alburqueque.
A funeral mass for Anne will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at SS Joseph & Michael Roman Catholic Church, 1314 Central Ave, Union City, NJ 07087.
