Eugene P. LaMastro was born on February 16, 1949 in Jersey City, NJ to Vito and Anne LaMastro (nee Brignola). He passed away on April 14, 2021 after a very courageous battle with cancer. Eugene grew up in Hoboken, NJ and went on to become a Marine Corporal and valiantly serve our country in The Vietnam War. He was a Union City Police Officer for 9 years before he found his life-passion in serving on the Union City Fire Department. In the days following 9/11, he worked bravely amongst his fellow heroes during the recovery efforts at Ground Zero. He became Fire Captain in April of 2006 and retired after 29 years of devout service. The friendships he forged during those years and the memories, pride, and love for the job he took with him were ingrained in his heart and spirit. He will be so sorely missed by all of his brothers in service.
He always had an adventurous spirit, which he put to work again during retirement with the inception of Firehouse Bagel Company and eventually Firehouse Bagel Company #2 serving the Sussex county area. His personal touch is on every inch of both locations and it brought him great joy to combine two of the things he loved most, food and firehouse memorabilia, to serve the community in which he lived.
Eugene was also the heart of a very loud and loving Italian Family. He was a presence in The LaMastro Family like no other. His spirit, antics, and the joy, laughter, and outrageousness that he brought to every encounter was something that everyone counted on. His pride in family, Italian heritage, his nicknames, culinary expertise, and the love and affection he showed to all is something that will forever be remembered as a blessing and privilege.
His entire life was dedicated to service in various forms and to living and loving life and the people he shared it with. To say it is a life well-lived is an understatement.
Eugene is predeceased by his father, mother, and brother Albert LaMastro. He is survived by his brother, Louis LaMastro and his wife Paula (nee Pedulla), their daughters Lisa and Valerie and their families, and many adoring cousins.
Friends may call Monday, April 19th from 4-9 at Leber Funeral Home 2000 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Union City, NJ. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday April 20th at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church 308 Jefferson St., Hoboken NJ.
