Lucy Monaco age 86, of Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Thomas Monaco for over 62 years, and equally beloved mother of Mary Monaco, Thomas J. Monaco and his wife Patty, and Tracey Anton and her husband Rick. She adored her six grandchildren – Alex, Julia, Matthew and Spencer Monaco and Joe and Nick Anton.
Lucy was born in Union City, New Jersey in 1935 and raised with her younger sister Margaret in a loving home. Her parents, Marie and John Milcetich, emigrated to the US in the 1920’s from Croatia, specifically, the Adriatic island of Krk.
Before her children arrived, she took great pride in her job as an executive secretary. There were no sneakers or flats for her when she commuted to work in NYC on “The Tubes” – only heels. For a time, she worked on the 69th floor of the Empire State Building and would recount how the office windows were often in the clouds.
She met the love of her life, Thomas Monaco, on a blind date in 1956. Her best friend was dating his best friend and thought they would be a match. Tom and Lucy married in 1959 and embarked on their long life together.
Lucy was a consummate organizer, avid seasonal decorator, amateur astrologist, collector of cookbooks and lover of polka dancing, especially in her youth. But most of all, she was a beacon of love and constancy for her family. Her entire existence was centered on caring for her family and making sure they knew they were deeply, deeply loved. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her warmth, grace and gentle ways.
She will be missed every day and remembered with great love and gratitude.
A visitation for Lucy will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd, Union City, NJ 07087. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM at St Anne Church, 3534 Kennedy Blvd, Jersey City, NJ 07307 followed by the interment at Holy Cross Cemetery North Arlington, NJ.
