Dearest Marie, 

You were such a welcoming spirit when I moved to Union City. Always a friendly wave and cheery chat in the street. Forever giving of your time to help others or to look after the local animals. So much fun singing around the piano with Ada and Johnnie then making extravagant hot chocolate! Wonderful memories! Thank you!

Marie’s history with my family goes back to before my time as she grew up with my Nonna, Zia, and Zio. She would recount to me the times when growing up she would walk around the block to see what Mrs. Leggiero (my Great-Grandmother) was cooking on 17th St. Those times started up again as she was always a fixture at BBQs and parties at my house no matter the season although I think her favorite was Christmas due to the cookies! She was constantly putting others first making sure that they were able to get what they needed whether that be at the Food Pantry or with Animal Rescue. I will always remember the time she came to the food pantry and told me that one of the parishes that donated food did a write-up in the bulletin and listed her as “Sister Marie of the Sisters of Charity” She thought it was the funniest thing and it stuck! Her nickname to this day at our pantry is Sister Marie. She was Union City’s modern-day St. Francis making sure to take care of those on the margins whether they be human or animal. Whenever I hear people talk about Marie whether at the Knights of Columbus, the Scouts, or around our city, I always hear more stories about the amazing things she did for those around her. She was the best our city had to offer and she was a beacon of hope to those who needed it most. Every week at the pantry Ellen would always ask her if it was time to go home yet so Marie wrote on a piece of paper and taped it to the wall “No it’s not time to go home and no we can’t leave early” she always got a laugh when we would point to it after that when Ellen asked if we could go home. Well, Marie, it is your turn to go home we’ll do our best to live up to your example of charity and caring and continue your work here in Union City to the best of our ability. Rest in heavenly peace my dear friend, you will be sorely missed.

I have some special childhood memories… At Christmas our family would drive to visit my father’s family, the Breunig’s. All 6of us packed in our car and out the windows the streets were sparkling with magical holiday lights. Then we would walk up the many steps into their home all decorated for Christmas with gifts for each of us and a nice dinner together. 
The summers are filled with memories of Manasquan! Still a favorite place of mine. I loved swimming, the arcade and collecting beach glass near the rock jetty.

My name is Laura.   I live on Kennedy Blvd off of 18th street.  
My boyfriend Brian parked his car next to Marie house, we loved to chat every time we went out,   
Brian was the first one out there on a snowy day shoveling the driveway and sidewalk. 
He came home for lunch every day and always saw Marie with a huge smile on her face. 
I loved walking by and stopping to chat, she was a beautiful soul and I will truly miss her presence in the neighborhood!

I can remember about 6 years ago I met Marie. I was looking to volunteer and was directed to Mother Seton and Marie was there. From the moment we met, I knew Marie would be someone I would know and love for a long time. A warm spirit, caring heart and always went the extra mile for those in need. But also very firm, did not let others mistake her kindness for weakness. I looked forward to Tuesday nights at the pantry, getting to hear the week’s happenings and whatever else she would share. I am grateful we crossed paths, thankful for everything she gave to this world and blessed to have had the 6 years I got to be in her life. Much love to you Marie, I’ll see you on the other side.

This is how I will remember my dear friend and neighbor, Marie. Lived on the same block with her since I was 2. She won that stuffed moose at a tricky tray fund-raiser for Friends of Animals. Her love of animals and for helping our community was boundless. She was always ready, willing and able to help. I was a recipient of her help from time to time. She also gave good advice. I am glad I grew up with her in my life and will miss her very much. Until we meet again Marie.....

Marie, I will always cherish our time working in the garden together. I  will miss your sense of your humor,  our talks about life and of course sharing updates about  all of the animals.   You lived your life well in service to others.  Thank you for caring so deeply about all of us.  I will miss you.

Marie was a woman of unconditional love and service. There was nothing she wouldn't do for another person or animal, especially cats. She served and eventually ran the Ss. Joseph and Michael food pantry for years. During the Pandemic, she kept the pantry going from a distance, closing for only one Tuesday. She was very much loved by the people she served and served with. She never hesitated to help anyone and was easy to talk to. One should only ask any of the food pantry patrons.

She was my resident crazy cat lady to whom I could talk cats (from how cute they are, to care tips, to the best vet).  We would even talk about theater and musicals. She was remarkable yet humble and had special relationships with many neighbors. (She always spoke highly of your gatherings.)  I am blessed to have had such a special friend.

Marie, thank you for your selfless love and the love you gave my family (fur baby & human baby alike.)  You will be missed tremendously.

So sorry to hear of Marie's passing.  Good memories of spending time with Marie, Florence and our friends at her house, during High school and well after.  Marie may you rest in peace.

Our dearest neighbor, Marie, was the sweetest friend one could ever ask for. Her kindness knew no bounds, from her tireless work at the church's food kitchen every week to caring for our gardens when we traveled to be with our family, to taking in lost kittens in the neighborhood. Her selflessness and warmth will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Marie leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and community spirit that will forever live on in our hearts.

Rest in peace, dear Marie. You will always be remembered and cherished.
