Mitch was the devoted son of the late Walter (Gary) and Rose Marie Gerrity, beloved husband to Eileen Higgins, loving father to Bernadette Gerrity and stepfather to Jenna Gambuzza. Mitch was a protective and loving brother to Scott and proud uncle to Matthew and Alexa.
Mitch was born and raised in Union City, graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in West New York in 1975. He joined the Union City Fire Department in 1984 and retired in 2013 from the North Hudson Regional Fire Department after serving and protecting his community for 29 years. He often would say “it was the greatest job in the world”. Of course, Mitch would have a career in helping and caring for people…it was in his nature.
Mitch was a devoted NY Yankee and NY Giant fan and hosted epic tailgates at Met Life Stadium with all his friends and family. Mitch was a passionate fisherman enjoyed fishing down the Jersey shore on his boat “The Big I” or heading to the canyon on a tuna trek with his friends.
Mitch was young at heart and had a very generous heart. Nothing made Mitch happier than being with family and friends and making sure everyone had a great time!!!
He loved hosting parties, DJing, cooking for the tailgates, going to the Broadway on Wednesday nights, attending college football games, planting and beautifying our beach house, fishing, fishing and more fishing, and hanging on his boat at his marina enjoying a big fat cigar!
It was not the longest life we all hoped for, but Mitch had a great life…filled with friends, family, and a lot of fun times! We will always think of Mitch…when we hear a “great Mitch song”.
A visitation for Mitchell will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd, Union City, NJ 07087. The Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday December 28, 2022 at 11am at Sts. Joseph and Michael Church in Union City.
In lieu of flowers Mitch would have appreciated a donation to the John P. Higgins Scholarship Fund. Checks payable to Hudson Catholic High School, 790 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City NJ with memo note to JPH Fund.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.leber-fh.com for the Gerrity family.
