

Born on February 3, 1946, in Porto Judeu, Terceira, Azores, Portugal, Berta was the beloved daughter of Jose Nunes de Melo and Maria Candida Ferreira. She carried her Portuguese heritage with pride throughout her life, sharing its beauty through her cooking, music, and deep love of family.
On September 12, 1971, Berta was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Jose Joaquin Perez, at Chapel 1 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. Together, they built a life rooted in devotion, sacrifice, and unwavering love. As a military spouse, Berta faithfully supported her husband during his active-duty years while dedicating 27 years of service to the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
Berta was a woman of deep and abiding Catholic faith. She found strength and peace in prayer, reciting the Rosary and her devotion with to Fatima and Jesus Christ. Her faith guided her life and shine through in her kindness, generosity, and compassion toward others.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished “Mima” whose greatest joy was her grandchildren. Her home was always open, filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aromas of her cooking and baking. She found happiness in the simple blessings of life—tending to her garden, feeding the birds, listening to Portuguese music, and bringing people together around her table.
Berta will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her generous heart, and her unwavering love for her family. To those who knew her, she was truly an angel on earth.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Jose Joaquin Perez; her daughters, Tania Maria Perez and Christina Marie Perez; and her son, Eric Joseph Perez. Her legacy of faith and love lives on through them and all who were blessed to know her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jose Nunes de Melo and Maria Candida Ferreira; her brother, Jose de Melo; and her sister.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Nelda Ledesma of St. Helena Catholic Church for her prayers, Holy Communion, and spiritual support; to Clarice Adams and the wound care team for their compassionate care; to the Concho Hearts Hospice staff; to Zoila Mari Tapia at Juniors Personal Care home and her staff as well as friends and family, for their love, kindness, and support during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Berta’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
May she rest in the peace of Christ and may perpetual light shine upon her.
