BJ was born on July 28th,1926 to Mary (Erb) & Robah Swain in Washington DC. Little Betty Jean (or "Jean" to her mom) was the youngest of two daughters, and sister to Nancy Swain Shade. BJ graduated from Calvin Coolidge High in 1944 and worked as the secretary to the principal. After graduating from high school, BJ went to William & Mary and then to the University of Maryland. She was a cheerleader and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, a true "blue and blue".
BJ fell in love with a cadet at West Point and married Paul Mills Ireland Jr. on April 12th, 1947. Soon after, the birth of Paul Mills Ireland III, Linda Lee Ireland and Susan Elizabeth Ireland (Morgan) kept their house busy and full of love. BJ was a dedicated army wife and travelled the world with her family. She took great pride in her role as the Assistant Executive Secretary to the Chairman of the National Bank of Commerce in San Antonio.
Now, it's not very often that fate takes a hand. The death of her spouse led to the reunion and marriage to Col. George Hall. BJ and George were brought together by the same friend who set them up on a date years prior. BJ and George spent 26 beautiful years together and united two families.
BJ is preceded in death by her parents Mary & Robah Swain; her sister, Nancy; her husbands, Col. Paul Ireland, Jr and Col. George Hall; her son, Paul Ireland III; her daughter, Susan Morgan; and her grandson Paul Ireland IV. BJ is survived by her daughter, Linda Ireland and her partner Richard Buford; her daugher-in-law, Donna Ireland; her son-in-law, John Morgan; her granddaughters, Jennifer (Chris) Foot, Kelly Ireland, Allison (Scott) Courtney, and Melissa (Mark) Irving; her eleven great-grandchildren; and many friends and family.
BJ was known for her sweet demeanor, her love for shoes, and chic party dresses. She was a dedicated wife, mother, Nana and Great-Nana and will be missed by all.
