I was a Christian Brother with Danny back in Lafayette and Santa Fe.  Years ago I heard he had passed on and feel terrible that I've lived in Austin for the last 44 years and didn't know he was that close.  I'm really sorry I missed him and his lovely family.

The phone calls always began "This is your dad Dan...." His reason for calling  was usually to talk about getting together to do something. Often that something involved music.

I remember a door being opened and us entering a darkened and packed theater to see the movie musical Grease. Crowding onto a couch in front of a TV he'd hooked up to a stereo to watch the movie Flash Gordon (with a soundtrack by Queen) and The Police: Synchronicity Concert--on Betamax. Standing amidst fans in jean jackets and black band t-shirts as Loudness, from Japan, performed an ear-splitting concert. Pulling up outside houses in the suburbs advertising yard and garage sales and walking across grass or up paved driveways and going through cardboard boxes of used vinyl and tapes. Going to music stores like Sound Warehouse and Apple Records and spending hours browsing shelves and racks, looking for something new, old, different, and/or imported. Attending record conventions where there were lots of booths with plastic and wooden crates full of music, some of it rare (and expensive). He got me CDs (e.g. Kylie Minogue, U2, Guns N' Roses, Pearl Jam), cassettes (Kim Wilde, Madonna, XTC, Go-Gos) and records (picture discs and colored vinyl were favorites). 

Over time my music taste broadened to include more genres, artists, bands, and formats, as did his. We kept up with what each of us was listening to when we got together. A love of music was something we always shared.

It has been two weeks since we said goodbye, This was to be your eulogy. I think I was three and a half or four when I realized that I had two brothers, a Mom and a Dad. We were a crazy lot. Danny, Johnny, Mom, the headstrong woman, Daddy looking down from above and me, Carl, a baby brother of the family. When Mom went to work, the home and yard was ours. We had a zoo, a baseball team, a bank, an altar boy training service, a motion picture and television studio, a newspaper and a fun place to play and imagine. Danny was the planner, Johnny was the athlete and the business manager and I was the audience and the participant and sometimes the guinea pig. We were out to make a million in a day but we would settle for five dollars. Like the Lost boys in 'Peter Pan', we had to grow up and be like Mom and Daddy. We held on to these days as if they were our guideposts to our future. And now we're here, sixty-seven years later, still dreaming, still wishing, still living. We;ll keep it going Danny, because that was your plan, our plan. I tried to think of a proper song to say goodbye. Ahab the Arab by Ray Stevens or getting Better by the Beatles or even Old Friends by Simon and Garfunkel or Pat Metheny's Last Train. I choose Big Boys Don't Cry by the Four Seasons. Bu I do. I hope that I did a bang-up eulogy like you did others. Love, Carl

This is for my older brother, Danny. In 1946, there were two. In 1947, there were three. In 1948, there were four. In 1953, there were five. In 1955, the number went down to four. It stayed that way until 2007 and it went to three. In all those years, I loved and cared about the five of us. We had some good times and bad times but through it all we stood tall and proud of each other. Now in 2015, there is only two. We live our lives just like in the beginning. Danny:
I will miss our talks.  Especially the ones where we talked about us being "first-borns"....we thought we had all the answers just because we were "first" didn't we?  Thanks for helping me find all those names of artists and "oldies" that I would some times ask you to research for me.  
Since I was the oldest in my family, I didn't know what it was like to have an older brother until you came along.

"Thanks for the Memories" and "For the Good Times".   These are appropriate and beautiful words for one whose world was music (vinyl records, 8 Tracks, CDs, sheet music....)

Your life was full of helping people who were facing challenges (illness, depression, life problems, and death).
