Born to an Air Force Officer, Del spent his younger years living with his family across the world, including Hawaii and Libya, then settling in San Antonio upon his father’s retirement.
Del graduated from Douglas MacArthur High School in 1977 and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from (then) Southwest Texas State University. Upon graduation, Del began a career in the sales of industrial paper and packaging products for Matera and Pollock Paper Distributors. He later joined USAA, where he built a long and successful career as a Financial Advisor. Del took pride in his work and in providing for his family.
Del married Anna Laurie Dawson in 1990. Together they welcomed their sons, John Robert, in 1992 and Mark Anthony, in 1997.
Del was a devoted husband and father, known for his steadfast presence and willingness to help others without hesitation. Del was known for being strong-willed, but those who knew him best understood that this was part of what made him so dependable. Above all, Del loved his family deeply. He showed that love through his actions – the time he gave, support he offered, and the life he helped build. Those who knew him will remember his strength, loyalty, and the quiet ways he cared.
An avid sportsman, he loved hunting, fishing, and golfing. He took great pride in supporting his sons’ pursuits, particularly golf and football, and treasured the many family moments spent cheering them on. Del was a proud and dedicated father to his sons and grandfather to his grandson. Nothing brought him more joy than watching them grow into who they are today.
He was preceded in death by his father, Del Sr., and mother, Cathy Cooper. He is survived by his wife, Laurie, of Universal City; his sons, John (Madison) Cooper of Saint Hedwig and Mark Cooper of Universal City; and his grandson, Jack Wallace Cooper. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie (TyWayne) Graef of Universal City; his nephews, Jason and Christopher Graef; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends Richard (Donna) Peyton and Merland (Bonnie) Albert. He will be greatly missed by all.
Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City. The Visitation and Rosary will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, from 5 PM to 8 PM at Colonial Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on April 15, 2026, at 11AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, followed by the burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Antonio.
