Born May 19, 1939 in Willacy County, Texas to Julian and Olivia Flores, Fela was raised on a ranch with her siblings. She attended and graduated from Lyford High School in 1960 where she met Rene Lopez, whom she married on October 7, 1962 in Sebastian, Texas. As an Air Force wife, she devoted herself to her husband and children as they traveled, living in New Jersey, Oklahoma, Alaska, California, Guam, and Florida before settling in San Antonio in 1978.
An active member of the Catholic church both in Sebastian and San Antonio, she regularly attended St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Converse, Texas for over 30 years where she made friends with the other ladies in the Guadalupanas group and the priests that resided there over the years. Out of love of the church, she made beautiful hand-painted nativity sets and her own rosaries over the years. She was well known for her empanadas and peanut brittle as they would quickly sell out at the church bake sales.
Fela was known to be feisty and fierce in her convictions. She loved mariachi music above all else and was always ready to sing and dance along. Quick to smile and tease, she made the simplest traditions into the biggest memories for her family. Her menagerie of birds, dogs, and cats in the house and backyard was only eclipsed by the jungle of flowers and plants she cared for on her back porch where there was always a layer of bird seed spread to attract the neighborhood birds.
Fela is preceded in death by her husband Rene Lopez, Sr. (1998), her parents, Olivia Galvan (1986) and Julian Flores, Sr. (1987), and her two brothers, Valentin Flores (Terry; 2021), and Ramon Flores (Mary; 2021).
Fela is survived by her children, Rene Lopez, Jr. (Sharon) and Michelle “Rally” Delgado (Bert) of San Antonio, Dory Lopez (Donald) of Austin, Millie Lopez of New Orleans and Lorenzo Lopez of San Antonio. She is survived by her 7 grandchildren, Elise Hinojosa (Eloy), Cameron Chamberlain (Derrick), Larissa and Mateo Lopez, CJ and Parker Lightfoot, and Adam Delgado as well as her 2 great-grandchildren, Vivian and Wyatt Hinojosa. Fela is also survived by her siblings Estella Garcia (Pete), Julian Flores, Jr. (Sulema), Suzana Garcia (Ben), Isabel Sanchez (George), and Eduardo Garcia as well as countless cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held Monday, January 31st from 5:00-9:00pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, TX 78148 with a rosary from 7:00-7:30pm. A funeral mass will take place Tuesday, February 1 from 11:00am-12:00pm at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, 501 North St., Converse, TX 78109. A graveside service will follow the funeral from 1:30-2:00pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
