Geraldine (Gerry) Whigham Sheffield passed away peacefully surrounded by members of her loving family, on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the age of 85.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Universal City, followed by Interment at 1:30 P.M. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City.
Gerry was born August 5, 1932 in Cairo GA to Walter Andrew and Mary Lou Whigham. She was the youngest of their twelve children.
She was preceded in death by; husband Troy Thomas Sheffield; her parents, brothers: Eldron Vance Whigham, Elvet Gerald Whigham, Robert Judson Whigham, James Virgil Whigham, Walter Lawson Whigham, and the firstborn infant son; sisters, Kate Lavelle Kimbrel, Millie Velma Kelly, Mary Lavonia Harris, Gertrude Grace Giddings, and Clara Lou Maddox.
Gerry is survived by her beloved children, Debra Lynne Morrison and husband Geoffrey; Stephanie Renee Iden and husband Scott; grandchildren, Scott Morrison, Mitchell Iden and Addison Iden. She has numerous nieces and nephews and a host of many other loving family and friends.
Gerry met her brother Eldron’s best friend, Troy Sheffield, and the courtship began culminating with their marriage on May 2, 1954. She and Troy spent more than 58 wonderful years together until Troy’s passing on November 9, 2012. Gerry was a graduate of Cairo High School and Georgia Southwestern College. Her work career spanned over 40 years with more than 31 years in civil service with the United States Army and Air Force where she held numerous administrative and financial positions until her retirement in November 1990. Gerry loved being with her family and friends. She really enjoyed annual trips back home to South Georgia to visit family, and traveling with many of them to see all 50 states. Over the years, Gerry enjoyed square dancing, bowling, pinochle, and being involved in Garden Ridge-Bracken civic and community events. As long as she was able, she wanted to be in church, and was an active member at First Baptist Church in Universal City. She was an extremely giving person that always put others first. We have many great memories that can never be replaced. Gerry was truly special and her family and friends will miss her greatly.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Geraldine W. Sheffield may be made to the Enduring Love Foundation of First Baptist Church in Universal City.
