

Steve was born in Altus Oklahoma as the second child to William Sherwood Carter and Gladys Lavada Sherwood on October 8, 1950. Steve graduated high school from Columbus High School in Indianapolis, IN on June 4, 1968. He joined the US Army on February 25, 1969. He received training for Medical Corpsman at Ft. Sam Houston Texas in September 1969 to December 1969. He attended airborne school at Ft. Benning Georgia in December 1969 to January 1970. From there he served in Vietnam from September 1970 to July 1971 as a combat medical corpsman. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Medal Badge, Expert Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Overseas Bar, Vietnam Service Medal
with two campaign stars and his parachute badge.
Upon returning from service he was honorably discharged from the US Army and returned to Altus Oklahoma. He married Constance “Connie” Bernice West on June 29, 1973 and remained married until his death. He had two children Jason Scott of Seattle Washington and Corrie Marie of San Antonio Texas. The family moved from Altus Oklahoma to San Antonio Texas in August of 1988. Steve worked in the oil industry as Mud Engineer for Baroid/Haliburton from 1995 until his medical retirement in 2004. Steve worked out of Houston, Texas. He worked on several oil rigs out in the Gulf of Mexico as well as Overseas in the Middle East. Upon retirement Steve lived a relatively quiet life surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed sports, music and Western movies. He enjoyed playing billiards and teaching others how to play. He loved the family/friends poker night. He was a proud grandfather; “papa” and “powpow" to two grandsons, Austin Michael and Nathan Scott.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, his children, his grandchildren and his sister Paula Kay
Carter of California. He is preceded in death by his parents and his eldest brother William Ricky Carter.
Graveside service with Military Honors will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio Texas. The date and time are to be determined.
