Jeanne Murray was born on April 14, 1921 at home in Elwood, Indiana. After her father George Daniel Hershey passed, February 5, 1932, Jeanne lived with sisters Charlotte McAvoy and then Ruth Snook’s family until she graduated from High School in Crown Point, Indiana. Jeanne went to Olivet College, Kankakee, Indiana 1940-42 and returned to complete a majored in Business Administration 1946-48.
Jeanne quit college to join the WAC in 1943, reporting August 19th to Ft Benning, Georgia for training. Jeanne spent time in Italy (6/44) and then Cairo, Egypt (6/44-11/45). 1946 returned to finish degree at Olivet College.
She reenlisted in 1950 and served until 1969 in many parts of the world. Her last assignment was at Fort Leavenworth where she met William Bain Murray, II (deceased 11/16/2015) and married him.
Jeanne’s brother Robert William Hershey’s home with his wife Ester Pauline Crider Hershey and their two children, Roger Hershey and Robert William Hershey, Jr. was where she called “home,” when she came “home” on leave the Bob Hershey home was hers. As the Bob’s children grew up and Bob, Jr married (wife Carol Ann Brenner Hershey), Jeanne became known as Grandma Aunt Jeanne by Christopher Scott Hershey, Bob, Jr’s son.
Jeanne was a game player and could play anyone until they dropped. Many the games were played around the Hershey/Murray table while celebrating the holidays or just enjoying visits with each other.
Just before retirement she purchased a fishing cabin at Lake Waukomis, MO across from her brother Bob’s family and immediately remodeled it to a grand home. After Bill and Jeanne married they moved to Ozone, Arkansas where they purchased a house which Jeanne proceeded to remodeled, becoming the premiere home remodeler.
Jeanne and Bill were one of the first residents to move into the ARC (Army Resident Community) where they lived in an apartment on the 14th floor. They were involved in the ARC and well known by most of the Residents. Recently moving down to assisted living and health care.
The Hershey Reunion was begun in 1943 to celebrate with Jeanne before she entered the Army.
This reunion continues to this day with over 100 Hershey decedents attending. With 6 boys and 6 girls in Jeanne’s family this has been a great way to celebrate the family heritage and keep in touch with all branches of Jeanne’s big family. All too often families lose touch with members, but the reunion has continued to hold the descendants from George Daniel Hershey and Maude P. Humphrey Hershey together.
