Louis “Lou” Walter died on October 11, 2016, at the age of 93. The son of John and Lotte Walter he was born in Sheldon, Iowa, on August 11, 1923. He was a Merchant Marine during World War II and served in the U.S. Army, retiring as a major. He continued his career as a civil servant with the federal government with Civil Defense, retiring a second time as a GS-14. He built a successful business, Lou-Bon Gems & Rocks in Northern Virginia, along with his wife, Bonnie. Upon retirement they settled in Selma, Texas, where he served on the city council and as chairman of the Retama Development Corporation. In 2003, they moved to the Army Residence Community where he was involved in many activities. He leaves his wife of 70 years, LaVonne “Bonnie” Schneider Walter; his daughters, Connie Furbish and husband, Bruce Furbish of San Antonio; Toni Walter and husband, Gary Irby of Adelphi Maryland; and Lorri Brown of Warrenton, Virginia; seven grandchildren; Christine (husband Tyler), Toni, James, Jolene (husband Mark), Hannah, Grayson, Emma and four great grandchildren; Alynah, Caiya, Makenna, and Evie. He was preceded by his younger sisters, Charlotte Morris of Dalton, Georgia, and Eleanor Rowenhorst of Sheldon, Iowa. He often stated of all his accomplishments, his greatest joy in life was his wife, Bonnie, their children and grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers and employees at the ARC Lakeside Villas Assisted Living. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Sheldon, Iowa.
