John was born on May 4, 1938 in Manistee, MI to his loving parents, Carl and Audrey Anderson. He was a graduate of Manistee High School, Class of 1956, with an ROTC scholarship to Central Michigan University. The proud Chippewa was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and lettered in baseball. John graduated with his Masters Degree in 1962.
Following his university studies, he joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country for 22 years in Colorado, Germany, Texas and Washington, DC. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Upon retirement from the United States Army in 1984, ‘Coach’ began his 20 year teaching and coaching career at Marion High School. Coach Andy proudly and enthusiastically taught World and US History, Government and Economics. He also coached football, basketball and tennis.
John was a sports enthusiast, never missing a Detroit Tiger pitch or a Green Bay Packers and Michigan Wolverine down. He enjoyed his time at the American Legion Post 593 in Converse, TX for his daily beer and friendly banter. The ‘Coach’ was admired for his giving heart, humor, strength and faithful friendship.
Beloved husband of Carol Barnes Anderson for 11 years and the late Sharon Carlson Anderson for 35 years. Cherished brother of the late Ida Thayer. Loving father of Mark Anderson and Michael (Sally) Anderson. All-Star grandfather of Ashley (Michael) Johnson and Cameron Anderson. Great-Grandfather of Caroline and Conor Johnson.
A viewing will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, Universal City, TX on Wednesday April 22,2015 from 5pm to 8pm. Funeral Services will be Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 11:30am at Colonial Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
