Chief Master Sergeant Martin (Marty) Roth, Jr., (USAF, Retired), age 69, of Converse, TX, passed away on Jan 19, 2019 after a short battle with cancer. Marty was born Jun 4, 1949 in Spokane, WA to Martin Roth and Marjorie Sturges.
Marty entered the Air Force in 1968 and served at Clinton-Sherman AFB, OK; U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield, Thailand; Norton AFB, CA. In 1975 he became a member of the 89th Military Airlift Wing, Andrews AFB, MD, where for eight years he provided security for aircraft transporting the President, Vice-President, their families, Heads of State and Congress, traveling throughout the world. He served at additional bases from Field Station Kunia, Hawaii, to Brooks and Randolph AFB’s in San Antonio TX. His final Air Force position was as the Senior Enlisted Advisor at Randolph AFB from 1995 until his retirement in 1998. After his military retirement he was a Systems Analyst and Management Consultant for Karta Technology and Holland and Davis. From Feb 2000 to May 2013 he worked for the Texas State Attorney General as Supervisor, Special Collections Unit, Child Support Division. Refusing to retire, he put his leadership skills to work as Project Supervisor for Stellarware from Mar 2017 to Oct 2018. His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Expeditionary Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with seven devices. In 1972 he was awarded the Supreme Command Forward Master’s Badge, First Class, from the Defense Ministry of Thailand for his work with the Royal Thai Marine Corps. He served as an Administrative Director for the San Antonio USO. He was active in sports and was a certified referee for area volleyball, baseball, and basketball. He was huge supporter and referee for the San Antonio Special Olympics for thirty years. He was a member of Amvets Post 235, American Legion Post 593, and VFW Post 4676. Marty was a caring and giving man who loved being with his family and friends. His wit was unequalled. He loved the beach, his Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and Thai food. He was a shareholder in his beloved Green Bay Packers NFL team and avid fan. Marty is survived by his “Roth Boys,” Jason Roth of Glen Rose TX, Martin “Skip” (Traci) Roth III of Converse TX; grandchildren Malia (Jerad) Rivera of Killeen TX, Lauren Roth of San Antonio TX, Airman Jared Roth, USN of Norfolk VA, Grace and Chloe Brown of Universal City TX; brother Mark (Kim) Roth of Mena AR; sisters Mary Jo (Corky) Cook of Branson MO, and Marilynn (Steve) Groven of Hartland MO; Goddaughter/Niece Allison (Mayo) Adegbuyi of Algonquin IL and nephew Matt (Melissa) Carpenter of Nehalem OR; and many other nieces and nephews; friend and former spouse Mary (LeRoy) Hodgkinson of Glen Rose TX; close friends Emilio (el Jefe) Serrano and family of Live Oak TX, Mary Iverson (Russ Brown) of Canyon Lake TX; Mary Swift, Joanna, Jeremy, Preston, and Lyllix Powell, Jeanna Butler, and Nicole and Judd Nichols. Marty was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marjorie Roth.
Funeral arrangements: Graveside, Friday, Feb 1st, 9:30am at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter #3. Celebration of Life lunch at American Legion Post 667 at 504 Bowie, Universal City, TX, Feb 1st, from 1-4pm.
