January 7, 1934 – March 18, 2026
Mary Mildred (Dyer) Hicks of Cibolo, Texas, passed to her Heavenly home on March 18, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on January 7, 1934, in Madisonville, Texas, to Willie T. and Bertha Beatrice (McGary) Dyer, Mary’s life was defined by a deep-seated strength and an unwavering devotion to those she loved.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and Rosa (Maurer) Dyer; her siblings Henry Dyer, Ruby (Dyer) Nichols, Hazel Olivia (Dyer) Day, and William Thomas Dyer; and her grandson, William Harbert.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Edman Hicks, and her brother William Lee “Billy” Stapleton and Rosanna (Dyer) Pace. Her legacy continues through her children: Kenneth Hicks, Thomas Hicks (Darlene), and Carolyn Hicks; her grandchildren: Thomas “Douglas” Hicks (Patricia), Mary “Desiree” Harbert, and Travis Hicks; her five great-grandchildren: Hayley Davis Black, Christopher Kimerer, Cecily (Hicks) Flores (Adrian), Corey McDonald, and Alivia Harbert; and her two great-great-grandchildren, Alexis Kimerer and Sloane Flores.
Mary’s journey was one of remarkable resilience. At the age of eight, she and her siblings became wards of the Texas Children's Service Bureau, remaining there from 1941 until 1950 when she was fostered by Elizabeth and Patrick Armstrong. That foundation of care blossomed into a life of service and love. While working at Steves Sash and Door Company in San Antonio, Mary met the love of her life, Edman. Their connection was immediate; they met on August 18, 1952, and were married just six weeks later on October 11. That whirlwind beginning led to a beautiful, enduring marriage of 73 years.
As a military wife, Mary was the heart of a home that spanned the globe—from the familiar landscapes of Texas to the shores of Morocco, Hawaii, and New York. She and Edman shared a passion for discovery, traveling the country in their RV and finding beauty in every corner of the nation.
More than just travelers, they were keepers of history. Through extensive research, Mary and Edman compiled volumes of family ancestry, reaching back several generations to ensure their children and grandchildren would always know their roots. This dedication to family was matched only by her creative spirit; Mary was accomplished in many crafts and found great joy in music, often filling the air with the sound of the piano.
Above all, Mary was a woman of profound faith. A devout Christian, she was always ready to share her testimony, whether through teaching Sunday School or her involvement with the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 730 in Somerset, and Grace Point Church in San Antonio.
Mary was cherished by all who knew her. She leaves behind a map of a life well-lived—a story of a girl who found a home and spent the next nine decades building one for everyone else.
