Melvin “Mel” Weathersby was born on July 28, 1937 to Clarence and Lorela (Womack) Weathersby. He was the 7th of 12 children. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955 and married his bride, Carolyn (Bernal), in 1963. He served more than 30 years in the Air Force and retired as Major in 1986. Mel was a Licensed Professional Counselor and joined the staff at Boysville around 1977. He worked there in the evenings and on weekends as a Career Development Counselor and licensed Child Care Administrator until 1992. After retiring from Randolph A.F.B., he began his “third” career-his passion- in education. Mel worked at Southwest Texas State University as an adjunct instructor before joining as full-time faculty in 1993. His military background allowed him to contribute successfully to the ROTC program at the university. His academic expertise included Marketing, Management, Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Interdisciplinary Studies with the OCED/OWLS department. He most enjoyed his role as advisor-helping many students get back into higher education and achieving their academic goals. Melvin is survived by Carolyn, his soulmate and bride of 51 years; his daughters, Stephanie and Melissa; his grandchildren, Matthew and Theresa; two sisters, Emma Smith and Eloise Bachelor; his brother, Ray; his two “boys” (dogs), Lucky and Harley, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, students, and friends.
