Myrna Jo Brown Wenk of San Antonio was called home by her Heavenly Father on Sept. 9. She was born on Sept. 11, 1940 in Sherman, Texas to Floyd and Velma Brown. As a teenager, she caught the eye of Theodor “Ted” Wenk, an enlisted airman, stationed at nearby Perrin Air Force Base, at the local roller skating rink. The two skate-danced their way across North Texas and Southern Oklahoma and were married on June 2, 1957.
The couple spent the next two decades traveling the country and the world in the United States Air Force. They were stationed at air bases in Texas, North Carolina, England, Germany and New Jersey before retiring in San Antonio in 1975.
As a young military wife, Myrna volunteered for the Air Force teaching both children and pilots water survival training. Next she volunteered for the Red Cross teaching swimming lessons to children and when they were transferred to South Texas she took on teaching swimming lessons to special education children.
While her husband served a tour in Vietnam, Myrna managed three community swimming pools while teaching multiple swimming classes in Sherman. A near fatal car accident, in which she broke her neck, ended her career as a swimming instructor.
Once her children were grown, Myrna took classes in the civil service, the couple enjoyed taking Caribbean cruises, averaging two a year for several years before a chronic pulmonary condition ended one of those cruises in a medical airlift out of Mexico.
Rehabilitating in a skilled nursing facility for the past four years, Ted was her constant companion and coach spending eight hours a day every day encouraging her to complete her physical therapy and attending to her every need.
Myrna was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma since 1976 and had a special devotion to Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Ted, of San Antonio; her son, and daughter-in-law, Mike and Patti Wenk of New Braunfels; son, Mark Wenk of Helotes; grandchildren, Kandis (Greg) Felux of San Antonio; Christopher Wenk of Helotes; and Jordan Wenk of San Marcos; two great grandchildren, Joshua and Ethan Felux; and her sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Tony Smith of Sherman.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 14, 2014 from 5:00 pm. Until 8:00 pm. with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, September 15, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery.
