Randolph (Randy) Chalkley was born to a U.S. Navy family on September 30, 1948 in the Newport Naval Hospital, Newport, Rhode Island to Johnnie and Mae Chalkley. He grew up traveling the world until he left home to go to Auburn University where he got both his B.S. and M.A. degrees. At Auburn he joined the Air Force ROTC and then served a full career in the Air Force retiring at the rank of Major after 21 years of honorable service. He first married Sandi, whom he met at Auburn and they had two sons, Joel and John, and two grandchildren, Sandra Diamond and Justin. Randy was active in his church and became a Stephen Minister who dedicated himself to the care of others during a crisis. Widowed after 26 years, he was married again to Cathy, who blessed him with another 13 years of marriage.
He was a devout Auburn Tigers football fan and loved to watch college football. He enjoyed his hobbies of various collecting and enjoyed a past time of computer gaming. He was always interested in any John Wayne movie. He was known for his intelligence, quick wit, strong presence, great big hugs, and a warming smile.
Randy was preceded in his death by his father, Johnnie, his first wife Sandi, and his second wife Cathy. He is survived by his mother Mae, his three brothers, Tex, David, and Mark, his two sons, Joel and John, his two grandchildren, Diamond and Justin, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 17th, 2020 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209 at 1315 hours (1:15pm) at shelter #2.
