He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Esther R. Hendry and son, Berger Howard. He is survived by his children John Hendry, Bruce Hendry, Russ Howard, Sandra Fewell, Bunny Barbieri, Cindy Howard, Harry Hendry & their families which include 20 treasured grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
He traveled the globe throughout his distinguished 25-year career in the United States Air Force followed by an exceptional 20 years of civil service.
A fierce competitor in life as well as in all sports, his goal later in life was to always “beat his age” on the golf course. He enjoyed hours of cards and games including bridge and, in later years, marathon sessions of Phase 10 and Scrabble with his children and grandchildren. The Colonel, also known as “Gramps,” will always be remembered for his quick wit, dedication to the Lord, generosity and his completely accurate arsenal of knowledge in which he showed no hesitation when called upon to recall. He demonstrated extreme independence into his final days driving himself to Rolling Oaks Baptist Church, to visit his grandchildren in Austin, and to his 95th birthday celebration. His spirit will always be present in classic Colonel hobbies and tastes - crossword puzzles, hard-boiled detective novels, milkshakes, plain hamburgers, peanut butter crackers, root beer, and his famous "Hendry" chip dip.
A visitation and funeral service will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk, Universal City, TX 78148 on Friday, June 19, 2013 from 10:30 AM-11:30 AM with the service starting at 11:30 AM.The burial will commence at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:15PM.
