On October 20, 2022, Heaven welcomed another angel as Teresa (Casal) Lozano passed away after complications from a stroke at the age of 88. She was born on August 29, 1934, in Manila, Philippines, the daughter of the late Antonio and Socorro Schon Casal and the second of five children: Rosario, Willie, Ramon, and Father Gabriel Casal.
Growing up, Teresa attended Catholic schools and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music at Holy Ghost College in the Philippines. She met Staff Sergeant Seferino H. Lozano in September 1955 in Manila, Philippines, and they were married in December 1955. In March 1956, they traveled for 21 days on the cruise ship President Wilson Lines from the Philippines to the United States, where they began their lives as an Air Force family in California, West Germany, New Mexico, and back to California, where Seferino retired after 20 years. They moved to Universal City, Texas, and have lived there since August 1969.
As a military wife, Teresa worked very hard raising their five children, Antonio (Tony), Carmen, Ana, Ramon, and Maria. She was quite the cook and housekeeper, and very involved in the Shepherd A.F.B. NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) Wives Club, and member of the Randolph A.F.B. Catholic church choir for many, many years. She also played the organ at weekday masses held at Chapel One/Randolph A.F.B. Jesus asked us to love and serve and Teresa took that to heart as she ironed the altar linens in her spare time. Teresa was an accomplished seamstress and had an eye for decorating; she was self-taught in many creative skills, such as reupholstering furniture, and she had quite the green thumb which was visible when you stepped out of the house into the family backyard! With five children she and Seferino could stretch a dollar, she made her own patterns to sew clothing for her children. Trilingual, Teresa was fluent in Spanish, Tagalog and English. Teresa and Seferino loved traveling abroad and stateside, with their favorite vacation destinations being France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Mexico, the Bahamas, Lake Tahoe and Branson, to name a few.
Teresa taught piano lessons five days a week to local school children in the family living room and held annual piano recitals in the home, then later at a local church because she had so many students. Most proud, Teresa was sponsored by Rosemary Grimes, a friend from the Catholic Choir Group, to the Tuesday Musical Club (TMC) of San Antonio. The TMC was founded in 1901 by five women who envisioned studying, performing, and promoting fine music to the local community. Teresa performed in the TMC annual dance programs and sewed many, many costumes for those dance performances over the years. In February 2016, she was granted the achievement of being named a TMC Honorary Lifetime Member.
In 2015, Teresa and Seferino celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and renewed their vows at a special mass with her brother, Father Gabriel Casal, officiating. She was a devout Catholic, a child of God, and she loved unconditionally. She was a nurse for her family, and a strong, funny, talented wife, mother, grandmother/Abuelita, great-grandmother, and friend to many.
In 2016, Teresa was diagnosed with dementia, and Seferino was her primary caretaker. Despite complications with memory loss she worked the crossword puzzle daily from the local newspaper and played the piano often until September 2022 when she suffered a stroke. The children of Teresa would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our father for the love and care he provided to our mother during her final years dealing with dementia.
