Vernonia, also called Nona, wife, mother, daughter, sister, Granny, and devoted friend was a blessing to all that knew her. Nona grew up on her family farm in Coy, Alabama and graduated from Wilcox County High School. Nona loved to sing and performed on television in the early 1960’s. Later she became a military wife and raised 3 beloved children. She settled in Converse, Texas with her dear husband, Robert Dean Boyd, who preceded her in 2008. Nona was an extremely kind and generous person who always helped others, she was famous for her delicious country cooking and baking. She lovingly baked and decorated every family member’s cakes for birthdays and special occasions with pride and joy. Nona and her husband Bob were active members of the Converse Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. She was the shining star of her family, loved, and was loved by everyone she knew. Nona was always full of joy and had a true heart of gold! She enjoyed attending church services at Harvest Fellowship and Cornerstone Church. She retired from Joske’s department store as a manager of the china department. She will be forever missed by all her family and friends. Nona leaves behind her sons, Michael D. Hoover (Trish) and Richard D. Hoover and her daughter, Jacqueline D. Gaines. Sister, Marie Goza (Don), Brother, Randy Collins (Debbie), Sister-in-law, Shirley Collins.
She also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, Gregory Hayden (Jennifer), Shannan Schnittger (Jason), Laura Chism (Will), Tiffany Hoover, Kirstin Hoover, Steven Gaines (Christina), Mandy Gaines, Joshua Hoover; and 5 great-grandchildren, Lindsay Hayden, Karly Hayden, Luke Hayden, Madeleine Chism and Remedy Matthews and countless friends.
Celebration and Memorial Service held at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, 625 Kitty Hawk, Universal City, on Thursday morning, March 13, 2014 at 9:45 a.m., followed by burial site blessing at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Visitation to be held at Colonial Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
