Barbara Hamrick Smith

Barbara H. Hathcock Smith, formerly of Charlotte, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 9th at Kempsville Health & Rehab in Virginia Beach, VA. Barbara was born in Richmond, VA, July 27, 1931, the daughter of Paul and Sarah Hamrick. She grew up in Charlotte, NC. She was an LPN and worked for Presbyterian Hospital for 44 years, primarily in the EKG Dept. She was a long time member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and later attended Plaza Presbyterian. Barbara exemplified the love of Christ and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother (GiGi). She never met a stranger and was a faithful friend to many.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Joe D. Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra H. Brown and her husband Jim of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Chris Brown and his wife Jennifer of Chesapeake, VA, Jennifer Maggiore and her husband Joe of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kimberly Nieter and her husband Brent of Chesapeake, VA; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Carolyn Strange of Virginia Beach, VA.

A celebration of life service will be held at Church of the Messiah, 816 Kempsville Rd., Chesapeake, VA at 2:00 PM on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015. A graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC at 2:00 PM on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Kempsville Health & Rehab and Sentara Hospice Services for the loving care they provided for Barbara. Memorial donations may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
