LDCR Jack Jones, USN, died peacefully at home at age 91 after a battle with prostate cancer. Jack was born in Prescott, Arizona. He served in the National Guard, and was a member of NROTC at the University of New Mexico, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Education. Upon graduation, he earned his commission in the United States Navy where he proudly served as an officer in the supply corps. During his active duty service, he earned the Vietnam Service Medal with 5 stars, in part due to his in-country service with MACV-SOG in 1965 and 1966. Jack’s other duty stations included the USS Buchanan, the Main Navy Building Washington, D.C., the Armed Forces Staff College, and Operational Test and Evaluation Force. After his retirement from the US Navy in 1977, he worked for 16 years for the City of Norfolk’s Employees’ Retirement System in various accounting roles. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Leo University (magna cum laude), and a Masters in Public Administration - Financial Management from Golden Gate University.
Jack’s formative years in Arizona and New Mexico led to his love of authentic Mexican food and Native American art, exceeded only by his passion for aircraft and automobiles. Although his eyesight did not allow him to become a pilot, it did not temper his enthusiasm for all things airplanes. He could readily expound upon specific aircraft models and spew facts about aviation history. His experience with accounting is appreciated by his family and friends, as Jack was known for being exceptionally organized (if not meticulous). If there was a question about when something was purchased or last serviced, Jack could find the answer within minutes. He loved a good bargain and was a consummate comparison shopper who gleefully researched products and vendors before making a purchase. He was proud of his service during the Vietnam War, and often wore his Vietnam Veteran hat to spark conversation with others. He loved learning about other peoples' experiences in the United States military, regardless of their rank or branch of service. Above all, Jack was known for being modest, compassionate, quick with a kind word, and for his love of his family and pets.
Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Jones, daughter, Caryl Thompson, her husband, Jeff Thompson, and his cat, Smokey. He was predeceased by his son, Chris Jones. He is also survived by dear friends John and Rinda Russ, caring neighbors too numerous to mention, and the compassionate staff of Westminster-Canterbury At Home and Ruth’s Care. The family fondly remembers your unwavering love and support, especially during Jack’s cancer journey.
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place and no memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, enjoy a good meal with family and friends. Jack would recommend chicken taquitos.
