Jayson Montero Rubis, a devoted son, brother, and retired U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 52. Born on January 24, 1973, in Villasis, Pangasinan in the Philippines, Jayson lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a profound love for his country and family.
Jayson's distinguished career in the U.S. Navy began in 1994 when he attended boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. He further honed his skills as an electronics warfare technician through rigorous training in Pensacola, Florida, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a testament to his commitment and expertise, Jayson was among the first plankowners of the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis (CVN-74). His naval journey took him aboard several esteemed vessels, including the USS Bataan, USS Iwo Jima, USS Nitze, and finally, the USS Anzio. In addition to his sea missions, Jayson served as a U.S. Navy law enforcement specialist at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, following specialized training at Blackwater. His service also included roles as a Navy recruiter in Martinsville and Richmond, Virginia.
Upon retiring from the Navy after two decades of honorable service, Jayson pursued higher education with the same tenacity that characterized his military career. He attended Tidewater Community College and later graduated Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Wesleyan University with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.
Jayson cherished the opportunities his naval career provided to travel the world, visiting countries such as Italy, Israel, Jordan, France, Greece, Saudi Arabia, and the Caribbean. In his leisure time, he enjoyed walking around Lynnhaven Mall, Mt. Trashmore Park, the Oceanfront, and the neighborhood pond. His interests were diverse, ranging from web surfing and enjoying quiet moments at Starbucks to indulging in action movies featuring his favorite stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Sylvester Stallone. A lover of music, Jayson was particularly fond of 80s and 90s pop hits from artists such as Journey, Hall & Oates, and Run-D.M.C.
Jayson's passion for learning extended beyond his formal education; he was an avid reader of books on samurai warriors, pro athletes, self-defense techniques, martial arts, and philosophy. His patriotism was unwavering, as evidenced by his numerous commendations, including three Navy achievement medals, a Navy "E" ribbon, six Navy good conduct medals, and many others.
He is survived by his loving parents, Alicia and Piorilio Rubis, and his brothers, Jeffrey and Johnerick M. Rubis with his partner Floriza Patana. Jayson's legacy of service, courage, and dedication will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A visitation for Jayson will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home.
In honoring Jayson's memory, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with adventure, achievement, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship.
