

Joal “Connie” Conway Stroud, passed away on June 11, 2012 surrounded by family at home. He was born on July 21, 1930 in Darlington, SC to the late Marie and John C. Stroud, Jr. He retired as a LCDR in June 1975 after proudly serving in the U.S. Navy for 28 years. After his Navy career, he was self-employed as a tax consultant until April 2012. He also volunteered as a docent on the USS Wisconsin. He received an Associate Degree from Palmer College in Charleston, SC and continued his education at Old Dominion University.
Connie was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Abbeville, SC. He was a member of the VFW, Fleet Reserve Assoc., and the Military Officers Association of America.
Connie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Sprouse Stroud; a son, Joal C. Stroud, Jr. “Jay” and wife, Stacy; two daughters, Joy Stroud Robertson and husband, Bill, and Jan Stroud and fiancé, Benny Hill; four grandchildren, Blair and Brooke Robertson and Alex and Cole Stroud; sister, Thomasine Lander and husband, Ben, of Abbeville, SC; sister, Alice Hughes and husband, Jimmy of Ware Shoals, SC; brother, Keith “Mac” Stroud and wife, Fran of Charlotte, NC; brother-in-law, Alvin Sprouse of the home; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Jan Stroud Peeler and Mary Ella Stroud Hueguenin; and two brothers, John Stroud and Archie Stroud.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 14th, (Flag Day) at 2:00 pm at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Rd in Virginia Beach. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Rosewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 13th, from 5 to 7:30 pm.
