With heartfelt sorrow but with joy for the promise of eternal life, Jesus called His child, JoAnn C. Bancroft "Home" to be with Him and those who've gone before her on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the blessed age of 91 years old.
JoAnn was born on March 31, 1934, in Norfolk, VA to the late James C. Swain and Daisy Lee Swain. Even though her mother left her at the very young age of 13 months old along with her siblings, Jimmy and Marilyn Swain Hall Vipond, she was alternately raised by her father, Aunts Annie and Effie Swain, and her stepmother, Margaret Pack Swain.
JoAnn was the most loving and wonderful mother ever. JoAnn was a devoted wife to Bill Bancroft. They met 78 years ago at a community Teen dance in Norfolk. They have been in love and together since and always will.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, William ("Bill"), Bancroft; daughter, Barbara ("Bobbi Jo") and her son-in-law, Carl W. Volz, Jr.; her two grandsons, Nicholas Brandon Volz and his wife, Cathy; and Nathan Brendan Volz; her two great granddaughters, Reagan Nichole Joi; and Natalie Brenda Volz. JoAnn is also survived by her husband’s twin brother, Lewis Bancroft and few nieces and nephews.
Tragically, JoAnn and Bill lost the life of their 20-year-old daughter on Dec. 25, 1979. Which is still a cold case. JoAnn was a Virginia Beach School Bus Driver for 29 years and was a favorite by all her students. JoAnn had numerous talents and interests. She was an exceptional cook, crocheter, and seamstress. She enjoyed family camping and water skiing. She was quite an athlete in her younger years. She was an active member of Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church where she was the treasurer of the women circles and a cheerful greeter at services.
She will always be remembered because she blessed us all with her love, great sense of humor, strength and encourager. Now she rests in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesús Christ. We will celebrate her new life and reunite again soon!
