Kenneth Randolph Carbaugh, Jr., 63, of Richmond, Virginia died Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 10:48 am. Ken was the eldest son of Kenneth and Elizabeth Carbaugh. Survivors include his brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed & Mary, John & Kim and Bill & Lauren, and his nephews and nieces Clayton, Edward, John Paul, Samuel, William, Caroline and Charlotte.
Born on November 20, 1958 at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, Ken was a graduate of Cox High School and Virginia Commonwealth University. Ken worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and was recently promoted to Data Warehouse Developer Advanced, where he served as the technical lead for their latest cloud project. During his years in Richmond, Ken also worked at The Tobacco Company Restaurant as a valet, Richmond Piano refinishing and selling pianos, and as a computer programmer at Circuit City and Capital One. Ken liked to work and liked to understand how things worked. At age 10, in a paper entitled “About Me” Ken wrote, “I like to make things that I can use, or things that run with a motor or a battery… I’d like to learn to make things out of wood.” During his life, Ken did all of these things and more. He was always working on a project.
Ken was an avid sailor spending much of his free time on the Chesapeake Bay on his Olson 34’ Sailboat “Chapulin” – his home away from home. He cycled throughout Virginia, including several tours through the hills of the Skyline Drive. He loved jazz with an eclectic musical taste ranging from the B-52s to Chick Corea to Frank Zappa. He enjoyed finishing the day with a cigar and a glass of bourbon on his front porch watching the world go by.
A funeral service will be held 11a.m. on Friday, June 10 at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park with a reception to follow at Our Saviour Lutheran Church.
