Pedro “Pete” Quejada Galvan, 97, passed away on August 30, 2019 at his retirement home. Pete was born August 24, 1922 to Victoria Quejada Arandia in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Philippines. He survived the Japanese occupation of the Philippines and went on to serve the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War serving as a Steward. Most notably, Pete served as Chief Steward (Head Chef) to Vice Admiral Wallace M. Beakley, commander of the 7th Fleet. He retired after 26 years serving the U.S. Navy, and he went on to work for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools and had a short stint as a part-time barber on the military base. Pete resided in Virginia Beach for 54 years. He continued his love of cooking and entertaining in his home. He also enjoyed making concord grape wine, gardening, and woodworking. He was always so proud to share his gifts and talents with his friends. He took pride in providing for his family and would do anything for any of his family and friends when in need. He was also known for his humor, wit, charm and long, entertaining stories, which he liked to repeat often. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his dear wife of 65 years, Maria “Mamie” Galvan, beloved daughter Jacqueline (Michael) Camlet, his much loved and adored granddaughter Madelyn, cherished sister Quirina Quejada Arandia (Dagupan, Philippines), and a host of close family and friends. A viewing will be held September 13, 2019 at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. A funeral mass to be held September 14, 2019 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with internment to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Ruth and her staff at Ruth’s Care for the compassionate care he received, especially in his last days, as well as the nurses from Kindred Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to U.S.N. Memorial or The Seeing Eye.
