

Dr. Scop began working at DIA in 1975 as Chief of the Command, Control, and Communications Branch of the Science and Technology Directorate. His leadership gained considerable acclaim for his group’s wide variety of contributions in threat analyses of Soviet air defenses, anti-ballistic missile systems, anti-submarine warfare, ICBM capabilities, electronic warfare; and other. In 1982 Dr. Scop formed an interagency intelligence team to ascertain that U.S. test facilities employed simulated air defense C3 systems that accurately portrayed threats. Dr. Scop led this effort until his retirement in March 2000. For these contributions and others Dr. Scop was awarded the DIA “Torch Bearer” Award in 2012. This is an award for making a significant and lasting contribution to defense intelligence that embodies the agency's core values and principles.
Dr. Scop was born and raised in Lakewood, New Jersey. He attended public schools and upon graduation attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT he earned a BS in 1959 and a PhD in 1964; both degrees were in physics. Dr. Scop then joined the staff of the National Research Corporation where he contributed to the discovery of light-weight, bullet-proof vests worn by U.S. Army personnel in Viet Nam, with considerable success.
Dr. Scop was married to Fern Scop, his beloved wife for 50 years, who passed in November 2014. His survivors include his three children, Richard Croteau of Salem, MA, Sandra Messore and husband, Tom of Brookline, NH, John Croteau and wife, Patricia of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother, John Scop and wife Elaine; six grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren; six grandchildren, Lisa Politano, Sheri Politano, Kimberly Croteau-Brinsfield and husband Stuart, Peter Croteau and wife Rachell, and Jo-Dean Townsend Lewis and husband Joe, and James Townsend; and numerous great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 9, 2017 from 6 to 8pm at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday at the funeral home.
