

She was a 1995 graduate of Kempsville High School. She earned a BA in German from East Carolina University, a BA in Psychology from George Mason University, and Certification from Barrie Montessori Institute. Rachel’s passion was working with children which she pursued in various capacities.
Rachel is survived by her parents Barney and John Barkey. She leaves behind many much-loved aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her 4 grandparents and four aunts, an uncle and a cousin.
Rachel was a prolific reader with many interests. She especially enjoyed Elizabethan history. She also enjoyed true crime podcasts. She was very curious and inquisitive and was always researching any new information she encountered. She loved all genres of music although They Might Be Giants was a longtime favorite.
A graveside service will be held at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach on Monday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend. A celebration of life will be held in June.

Realizing from her treatment how important it is, Rachel requested donations of blood, platelets, and/or donations to the Red Cross in lieu of flowers.
