Grampy, as he was fondly known, had a personality that could light up any room and a deep love for his family. One of his greatest passions was baseball, particularly the Boston Red Sox. Additionally, he was an avid fan of Duke basketball, always supporting his teams with unwavering loyalty.
Russ served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years, serving during the Korean War. During his service, he played on and eventually coached the Marine Corps basketball and softball teams. His military associations were an important part of his life, and he carried the values he learned throughout his lifetime. After his military service, the very next day to be exact, Russ began a successful career with the US Postal Service. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was working in the yard or simply taking in the beauty of nature. He believed strongly in community service and helping your fellow man. He was also a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America, and he coached in local little leagues.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 70 years, Beverly, and their three sons: Ronald (Cheryl), Michael (Courtney), and Dennis (Jennifer). He was the MVP grandfather to Shawn (Kristyn), Chelsea (Tony), Abigail, Erika (Joe), Josh (Alexis), and the proud great-grandfather to seven great grandchildren.
Russ will be forever remembered as a champion of love, family, and laughter. He would want us all to raise a glass and share our fondest memories. Oorah to a life well lived.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2:00 pm at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park with Full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
