

William Rex Gurley, Sr., 96, passed away on February 1, 2026. He was born august 4, 1929 in Goldsboro, NC; the son of Calvin and Glennie Nell Gurley. He was preceded in death by his two sisters Glennie Nell Vandergraft and Gloria Jean Philips and a nephew Thomas Carey.
He is survived by Dorsey J. Gurley, his wife of 75 years; brother Charles Gurley of Virginia Beach; sons William Rex Jr. (Jill), David Michael, and Raymond Keith Gurley of Virginia Beach; granddaughter Lauren Haeselin of Virginia Beach; four grandsons William Rex, III (Adele) of Florida, Christopher Gerald of Virginia beach, Christopher Michael (Mallory) of Richmond, and David Conner Gurley of Virginia Beach; great grandchildren, Abigail Haeselin of Virginia Beach, Nathan Haeselin of Germany, Joslyn Haeselin of Richmond, Dylan and Delainey Gurley of Richmond, Victoria York and Michael Torres of Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Retired Chief Gurley gave the city of Virginia Beach almost 40 years of service with the Fire Department.
Bill (as he was called) dedicated 60+ years to the masonic lodge, serving as Master of his lodge twice including the 100th anniversary. He was also an active member of the Khedive Shriners of tidewater.
His favorite hobby was surf fishing at Rudee Inlet and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm, on February 11, 2026, in Rosewood Memorial Park, 601 N. Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach. You may offer condolences at www.kellumfuneralhome.com
